KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT CASE STUDIES AND TECHNOLOGIES
1.Background and motivation:
Shan Food Industries was founded as a cottage industry in 1981 in Karachi, Pakistan by Sikandar Sultan, the founder & chairman. A few years later it started exporting to Europe, United Kingdom, United States and the Middle East. By 2008, Shan had become hugely popular within Pakistan due to its quality brands which were selling at affordable prices for common people. The company is now exporting its products to 52 countries as well in 2008.
In 2000, Shan increased its penetration in the central and northern regions of Pakistan, and officially launched in India in 2004 by organizing a cooking competition in New Delhi. Shan exports to 52 countries making it Pakistan's largest exporter of packaged spice, food, and rice mixes.

ISO Standards

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a global entity that classifies and regulates international standards between countries to enable international trade. We have successfully achieved numerous certifications and registrations for its continual improvement which are as follows:

  • 2004–2005 Best Merit Performance Award, FPCCI
  • 2003–2004 Best Export Performance Award, FPCCI
  • 2003–2004 Export Performance Awards, KCCI
4.Information technology support for knowledge management applications
The general conditions and structures in company differ significantly from those in integrated enterprises. Differences concerning the organization, the structures of knowledge and the structure of the existing information technology (IT) influence the tools used in knowledge management.
the information technology used in knowledge management today is up to the challenges posed by these dynamic usage scenarios spanning multiple companies. We will evaluate requirements to the IT- support for knowledge management based on the characteristics of company. After that, we will systematically examine how far existing tools comply with these requirements. The tools’ main deficits will be identified and approaches to alleviate these shortcomings will be pointed out.
5.Information technology architecture and infrastructure
Establishing a coherent IT infrastructure for knowledge management in distributed environments is a complex task. Tools which may be employed without difficulties in integrated enterprises display notable deficits in supporting inter-company knowledge management. There is a three-fold integration challenge, on the technical, the organizational and on the content level which cannot be solved by technology completely. The integration on the technical level may be done using a portal system. Portals enable the integration of functions such as knowledge repositories, publication, retrieval and user management.
